Café de Oriente, situated in Madrid’s Plaza de Oriente, hence the name, is a well known Madrid restaurant serving Spanish cuisine with a modern twist. Built upon the remains of San Gil’s Convent (17th century), the restaurant is famous in Madrid and is a charming eatery offering not only a restaurant but also a café and lounge bar. The pretty terraces sit just opposite the stunning Royal Palace, meaning that the restaurant is a top spot for those hungry sightseers who are looking for something a little more impressive than a quick snack. Owned by the Lezama restaurant group, Café de Oriente is a site of much historical significance in Madrid, the “salon del Aljibe” is actually seated upon the old wall of Madrid, which can actually be viewed through a piece of transparent flooring. Of course, this is no museum, the restaurants head chef Roberto del moral has created an innovative menu, adding modern touches to typical Spanish cooking. Dishes worth mentioning are the seared venison chop with venison meatballs and chestnut purée, roasted wild turbot served with squid ink paella and calamari and roasted lobster with a sweet pea sauce. Combining the history of Madrid with exquisite culinary pleasure, Café de Oriente is not your average city centre restaurant.
